We see a plain-clothes cop, his girlfriend with another man, a mother and child, an American tourist with a video camera, and a Secret Service agent newly returned from medical leave. Shots ring out and the President falls; a few minutes later, we hear a distant explosion, then a bomb goes off in the square. Those minutes are retold, several times, emphasizing different characters' actions. Gradually, we discover who's behind the plot. Is the Secret Service one step ahead, or have the President's adversaries thought of everything?
US President Henry Ashton is in Salamanca, Spain for a summit where an international treaty dealing with the fight against global terrorism will be signed and which was highly promoted by Ashton. Preceding the summit, Ashton is one of the primary speakers at a public event in Plaza Mayor when at approximately 12:20 local time an unknown sniper is able to shoot him. Amid the mass confusion and hysteria following the shooting, a massive bomb goes off in the plaza about three minutes later. The twenty minutes leading up to the shooting, the shooting and the explosion themselves, and the immediate few minutes following are seen through the perspective of a few people at the event that day. First is senior secret service agent Thomas Barnes who is on his first assignment protecting the president after taking a bullet for him less than a year earlier. Many believe Barnes is still emotionally unstable from that incident, but not Kent Taylor, his secret service colleague on this assignment, he who also got Barnes on this assignment. Second is Enrique a plain clothes Salamanca police officer who is assigned to protect Salamanca's mayor, the event moderator. Prior to the shooting, Enrique has an encounter with his girlfriend, Veronica, thoughts of who are on his mindhe spied her with another man. Third is Howard Lewis, an American tourist with a video camera, he who manages to film many of the goings-on. Despite the seriousness of the shooting and the explosion and Lewis' belief he has vital information on his camera of what's going on, he still places much of his focus on a little girl named Anna who has been separated from her mother following the explosion. Fourth is the president himself who has an interesting and surprising vantage point to the proceedings. And fifth is the operational group behind the shooting and explosion, they who show how they were able to shoot Ashton and set off the bomb. Will anyone in authority be able to piece together the information quickly both to figure out what's going on and stop the remainder of the plan in those few minutes following the explosion?
At the beginning of the movie, after the large explosion, Secret Service Agent Holden (Richard T. Jones) is seen chasing a man he believes to be a suspect in the attempted assassination of the President. At the end of the chase, he yells, "Stop Right There!", followed by a series of gun shots under an overpass. However, later the movie takes the viewer on the trail of an assassin trying to find his brother. As the assassin approaches the overpass he is given ample timehe interrogates the assassinto the whereabouts of his brother with no sign of Holden (Richard T. Jones), neither at that point nor the remainder of the film. What's going on?
I'm very confused–a friend told me this movie has had horrible reviews, and I see a 7 out of 10 on IMDb ratings–yet every review I read on IMDb says "excellent." And this movie was indeed excellent–saw it 2 days ago with a friend. I was so immediately excited by the movie that it combined with my Coke to start giving me my first anxiety attack in 20 years. What a movie beginning!! I put the Coke and my popcorn down on the floor and didn't touch them the entire movie. Other reviewers say the film repeats itself 5 or 8 times–actually it seems like 500 times. But you start WANTING to see the repetitions so you can help the Secret Service solve the bizarre happenings. And in the process of the repetitions, a tremendous, wildly exciting film unfolds and evolves. I also heard groans from the audiencethe "repeats" kept coming, so, if you are not an intelligent person, if you like everything spoon-fed to you nicely like some calm video game, or if you are a childish person, you will not like this movie. This film is only for those who love to be blown away by non-stop action and constantly twisting plot. Might have been the sound system, but I have never heard explosions this loud in my life–loved the sound. And after seeing this movie, I have a new respect for what cellphones can do, I have new respect for what our troops face abroad, and I'm going to be extra-careful whom I TRUST! My advice? Forget the ratings and reviews and go see this film–but you won't have time to eat popcorn or drink Coke.
Although it was held back by the studio for about a year, someone apparently came to the inevitable conclusion that no amount of ripening time was going to help this gimmicky and ultimately harebrained movie.
